About EOAS

Earth Day 2012 at FSU found our Department of Earth, Ocean & Atmospheric Science faculty celebrating not only the two-year anniversary of our interdisciplinary unit’s formation, but also the huge response from FSU undergraduates — more than 300 so far — to the department’s new Environmental Science degree programs.

Among the reasons for students’ growing interest in environmental science at Florida State, according to Professor Jeff Chanton: “Jobs, jobs, jobs.”

Oceanographer Chanton also credits the sea of ink generated by FSU earth, ocean and atmospheric science experts, who landed in media outlets from National Geographic to the CBS Evening News on the heels of the Deepwater Horizon oil spill in the nearby Gulf of Mexico.

Students are seeking environmental science programs that integrate chemistry, biology, geology, and physics — which is exactly what Florida State’s programs do.
