EOAS professor wins major meteorology award for research on El Nino and the dynamics of ocean currents

Dr. Allan Clarke has been named the winner of the American Meteorological Society's 2012 Sverdrup Gold Medal Award, granted each year to a researcher who makes outstanding contributions to the scientific knowledge of interactions between the oceans and the atmosphere. In winning the award, he was cited for "fundamental contributions to the dynamics of ocean currents and air-sea interaction with particular emphasis on El Nino/Southern Oscillation."

Environmental issues drawing students to new degree programs

Earth Day 2011 at FSU finds our Department of Earth, Ocean & Atmospheric Science faculty celebrating not only the one year anniversary of our interdisciplinary unit's formation, but also the huge response from FSU undergraduates - more than 300 so far - to the department's new Environmental Science degree programs.

Among the reasons for students' growing interest in environmental science at Florida State, according to Professor Jeff Chanton:  "Jobs, jobs, jobs."

Oceanographer Chanton also credits the sea of ink generated last year by FSU earth, ocean  and atmospheric science experts, who landed in media outlets from National Geographic to the CBS Evening News on the heels of the Deepwater Horizon oil spill in the nearby Gulf of Mexico.

Students are seeking environmental science programs that integrate chemistry, biology, geology and physics - which is exactly what Florida State's do.

Congratulations EOAS Faculty!

Dr. Joe Donoghue - Recognized as the Advisor of the Year
Dr. Jim Tull & Dr. Jon Ahlquist -  Received University Teaching Awards
Vasu Misra - Selected for a Ralph E. Powe Junior Faculty Enhancement Award from the Oak Ridge Associate Universities (ORAU). The Ralph E. Powe Junior Fauclty Enhancement Awards provide $10,000 for research by junior faculty at ORAU member institutions, and are intended to enrich the research and professional growth of young faculty and result in new funding opportunities. For more details, follow this link: http://www.orau.org/university-partnerships/faculty-student-programs/powe/default.aspx
Joel Kostka - Coauthored a report from the American Academy of Microbiology (pdf 6.86 MB). This report seeks to explain the role of microorganisms in oil spills to a general audience. Microbial degradation is likely to be the predominant mechanism by which oil is ultimately removed from the marine environment.Dr. Ian MacDonald - Coauthored a study which is the first to examine comprehensively the magnitude of hydrocarbon gases released during the Deepwater Horizon Gulf of Mexico oil discharge. The study has found that up to 500,000 tons of gaseous hydrocarbons were emitted into the deep ocean.
